Pet Funerals

When animals express their feelings they pour out like water from a spout. Animals’ emotions are raw, unfiltered, and uncontrolled. Their joy is the purest and most contagious of joys and their grief the deepest and most devastating. Their passions bring us to our knees in delight and sorrow.
– Marc Bekoff

I am a life-long animal lover and pet owner (I currently have 3 dogs). I know the many joys of having a furry companion and what they bring daily to our lives. I also know the devastation of losing a dear, much loved family pet. Our pets become family members and are often treated like kings or queens. They can be with us for many years and quickly become our best friends, they are always there for us through life's trials and tribulations; a constant companion. When a human loved one dies, we have the love and support of our loved ones but the same isn’t always true when we lose a pet – ‘it’s just a dog’ and ‘a pet funeral is just a gimmick’ or somebody trivialising our grief can be very hurtful. Losing a pet can be just as heart-breaking as losing a family member because they are just that.

Saying your last goodbyes in a personal and meaningful way gives you the chance to mourn your furry friend’s passing and importantly celebrate your companion's life.

Pet Funeral Celebrant in Carlisle
Pet Funeral Celebrant in Carlisle, Cumbria

I adopt the same methods for a pet funeral that I do for a human. You may have the funeral or memorial wherever you wish, there are pet crematoriums and cemeteries (where permission is granted) or you may want to scatter their ashes. The content is totally up to you and I can guide you through that and support you every step of the way. You can have a religious or non-religious ceremony, you may want to say a few words or ask somebody to do that for you, we could have readings or poems and even music. Alongside you and other friends and family who loved your pet I will take time to learn about your companion, what their likes and dislikes were, who they got on the best with, their best toy, their favourite walk, their much-loved treat and your happiest memories. I will write a funeral or memorial service and deliver it with compassion and sensitivity.

I have no doubt your pet meant the world to you. I will write a beautiful story of your baby's life and everything they meant to you and I will write a bespoke service that will honour them.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

You get in contact with me via email, message, phone call, facebook, Instagram, or in person and we have initial chat about your requirements and wishes. You can give me a date and I will see if it is available. If it is then lets meet up! We get to know each other and you can decide if you would like me to be your celebrant.
Image
Once you have decided I am the one for you I ask that you pay me a deposit. The fee can be found below.
Image
We meet up in person or over Zoom, Skype, FaceTime and we get to know each other even more. This can take between 1-2 hours but there is no limit. At this meeting I want to get to know all about your furry friend and their life story. This helps me make your ceremony totally unique and personal. We can talk about where they were born, who they grew up with, their time at school and any puppy stories, did they have any play dates or were part of any clubs, their personality, their character, your favourite memories of them, any significant events and how will they be remembered. We also talk about what ideas you have for your ceremony – will anybody else be speaking? Choices can be made from my wide selection of poetry and readings. Any additional pieces that hold special meaning or significance for your much-loved pet. I will help you decide how they could be arranged and presented. You may want a family member or close friend to do a reading or make a speech.
Image
I go away and compose a draft script for your ceremony using all the information I have gained from us meeting.
Image
It is important for me to say there are no restrictions on how many times we re-write the draft ceremony. It has to be absolutely perfect. If there is anything you don’t like, just let me know I really don’t mind.
Image
When I have the final draft I will add in any readings, poems or speeches so everything is well timed.

After the ceremony when there’s a chance to have 2 minutes with you I will present you with a beautiful presentation box with a copy of your ceremony script.
